LG Display has announced a new series of OLED panels. The big news, at least for PC enthusiasts, is the smallest 42-inch panel in this new series--the most compact of LG's OLED panels for TVs.

According to The Verge, the new series comes in 42, 48, 55, 65, 77, 83, and 88-inch sizes. Of course, we are talking about bare panels here; LG is a major supplier of OLED panels to several brands, including Sony and its own LG TV brand.

So far, OLED technology has yet to make a significant impact on PCs. One reason is that burn-in issues make OLEDs unsuitable for applications such as computing with persistent image elements, such as the Windows taskbar.

But also because suitable panels were not available to make OLED monitors, and the arrival of LG's 42-inch OLED panel could change that; 42 inches is probably larger than most people would want for desktop use. Also, even at native 4K resolution, 42 inches means a fairly modest pixel density.

But PC gamers don't have to wait to see if monitor manufacturers adopt new panels, as many of the latest generation TVs support PC-oriented features such as HDMI 2.1 and adaptive sync. 42-inch OLED TVs can be purchased as monitors, and they can be used to play games on the go, The option to buy a 42-inch OLED TV as a monitor and play as is will soon be available.

Since mainstream adoption of microLED technology is likely to be several years away, an affordable OLED option in a slightly PC-friendly form factor such as 42 inches would certainly be welcome.
