Borderlands 3 Cross-Play Launched, but PlayStation Owners Left Out in the Cold

In May, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford revealed that cross-play is coming to Borderlands 3. The update, released today, allows players on PC, Xbox, Mac, and Stadia to team up for a shootout or looting battle of their choice.

To get in on the action, you must create a cross-play display name. Even if you do not have crossplay enabled, you will be prompted to create one after the update is installed. (This is optional.) The handle you choose must be 3-16 characters long, begin with a letter of the alphabet, contain only a-z, A-Z, 0-9, or non-consecutive underscores, hyphens, and periods/full-width characters, and be unique.

You may have noticed that PlayStation is no longer supported. We explained this exclusion back in May, but the short version is that Sony is demanding a portion of the success of crossplay on their platform, namely money. 2K, the publisher of Borderlands, apparently was not willing to pay: unless and until either side concedes, which seems unlikely, PlayStation players will not be able to connect with non-PS players.

Today's update will launch the same "Revenge of the Cartels" event as the 2020 "Revenge of the Cartels" event. Completing the challenge will earn themed cosmetic rewards, including the Cosmic Ring ECHO Device Skin, the Pandora Sunset Weapon Trinket, and my favorite (from the name alone), the Framed Tenderizer Room Decor.

Themed seasonal events are now "endless" as well. This means that you can jump in and play whenever you want. The level cap has been raised to 72, allowing players to play with a total of 70 skill points. For more information on the update, visit borderlands.com.
