Facebook to Begin Testing Ads in Oculus Games

Facebook plans to begin placing ads in Oculus Quest games and apps within a few weeks, using data pulled from users' Facebook profiles. In a blog post, Facebook said that in-headset advertising is "an important element in creating a self-sustaining platform."

This inevitable step comes less than a year after Facebook began forcing new Oculus headset owners to use their Facebook accounts. And, of course, ads can pull information from Facebook profiles, a spokesperson confirmed to The Verge.

That personalized data will include much of what you do on Oculus, such as which apps you view and install, and even which other ads you click on. It will not include private conversations or anything more sensitive, such as "any weight, height, or gender information you choose to provide to Oculus Move. Perhaps any age or gender information on your Facebook profile is fair game for targeted advertising, however.

Developers can earn revenue from in-game ads, and Facebook will retain a portion of that revenue; according to The Verge, Facebook has not decided whether the ads will eventually come to the Oculus Home hub. The test is for flat ads that can be found on any website, but Facebook has stated that it is "also exploring new ad formats that are unique to VR."

The first ads will appear in a game called Blaston, with more apps to follow. Oddly enough, the Oculus blog demoing these early in-app ads indicates that there is an option to click on the ad and save the link for later. There will be a drop-down menu to report or hide individual ads, but Facebook does not mention an option to disable ads altogether.
