Sherlock Holmes Studio Frogwares Reveals Rebellious Life in Ukraine

Ukrainian studio Frogwares has been very outspoken about the Russian invasion of its country. Employees were forced to evacuate the Ukrainian capital of Kiev (opens in new tab) in May, and a few days later Frogwares announced that it would embark on an entirely new project (opens in new tab), partially as an act of defiance: "To disrupt and ruin our lives It is a clear middle finger to those who thought they could roll into our country wishing to do so," the studio said. The move also comes as a reward for an August crowdfunding campaign for a remake of Frogwares first game, "Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened," which offered followers the chance to put messages in shells fired at Russian troops The company outright rejected criticism (open in new tab) of the project.

Yesterday, the studio took to Twitter to report on recent developments.

Yesterday, the studio reported on Twitter, not about the status of the game, but about life in Ukraine.

"After a summer of relative 'normalcy' and being able to create some sort of routine, the wave of missile and suicide drone attacks that began in October took a mental toll on us," Frogwares tweeted. 'Every morning we wake up hoping that today will be another normal day. Instead, we need to be prepared for an explosion at any moment.

"When it does, we gather our family and pets and huddle in the basement, shelter, or bathroom. Surrounded by a sea of air raid sirens, anti-aircraft fire, and missile blasts, all you can do is sit there and wonder if this is your time."

The studio also noted the "rolling blackouts" and interruptions in water, heating, and Internet access that continue to plague Ukraine. Russia has begun targeting the country's infrastructure with drones and missiles, particularly Ukraine's power grid, after Ukraine's counterattack caused Russian troops to withdraw from the Kharkov and Kherson regions. Frog Wallace has sharp comments on that as well.

"Every time Ukraine wins a decisive victory on the battlefield (which we all absolutely celebrate)," the studio tweeted (opens in new tab), "we must also be prepared for Russian troops with fragile little egos to rampage the next day targeting civilians." They want to shrivel, freeze, and starve ordinary people in order to win the war they started."

Frogwarez said that, from its perspective, the constant attacks on civilians are having the opposite of the intended effect. Clearly this studio does not speak for all of Ukraine, but one must assume that it is a fairly widely held sentiment.

"Thank you all for being with us in some way during this terrible time," Frogwares tweeted (opens in new tab). 'See you again in 2023.
