Naughty Dog Finished "Uncharted," But Undecided on "The Last of Us"

It still feels weird to write about "Uncharted" (opens in new tab) on the hallowed pages of a PC gaming site, but it won't be long now, as in an interview with Buzzfeed (opens in new tab) (via GamesRadar (opens in new tab)), Naughty Dog co president Neil Druckman said the studio is "moving on" from the series.

The comments came during a discussion about Sony giving Naughty Dog free reign over which projects to pursue; Druckmann said that "Uncharted was a crazy success" and that Uncharted 4 is the studio's most He said that while it was one of the best-selling games, he did not feel pressure from Sony to continue releasing new games in the series. Naughty Dog was able to "put the final brush on that story and say [it] is done," he said. Of course, being one of Sony's most well-known and successful developers, it would be strange if he didn't have some leeway in choosing his projects.

So, we say goodbye to Drake and Sully, but Drachman is less clear about the future of "The Last of Us". According to him, the potential of "The Last of Us 3" depends on whether Naughty Dog can create "an engaging story - as the first and second films did - with a universal message and statement about love." If they can do that, they will "tell that story," but if not, they already "have a very strong ending in part two, and that's it."

If this is indeed the case, I can't say I'm heartbroken about the prospect of Uncharted going into retirement. These games are impressive showpieces with a lot of talent and production values behind them, but it's a series that feels very much like it has come full circle at this point. I do hope that the remaining games (the "Legacy of Thieves Collection" includes only "Uncharted 4" and "Lost Legacy") will at least be available on PC before the series goes to bed.

As for The Last of Us, a remake of the first game will be released this March (opens in new tab), and part 2 must be coming out not too long after. Thanks to the popularity of the recently aired HBO series (opens in new tab), the series is gaining momentum right now, so I'm sure Naughty Dog will manage to figure out the next story and its "statement about love" before too long. Until then, you can check out the show, wait for the release of the first game, or warm up with our own Fraser Brown's "Last of Us" nuclear heat take (opens in new tab).
