"Invincible," the comic book series from "The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman, is back in a big way following the success of the animated series released on Amazon Prime in 2021. The ultra-violent yet colorful and creative story parodies the superhero cliché without outright condemning it.

Skybound Entertainment announced last year that it would be producing several "Invincible" games, hoping to capitalize on this newfound enthusiasm. Superhero games are popular, and "Invincible" has an interesting cast of characters. So what have they chosen?

The mobile game was a bit buried in its first announcement with its cinematic trailer. Okay, Marvel Snap worked well. But the first step toward Steam is a visual novel called Invincible Presents: first announced at this year's San Diego Comic-Con panel celebrating Invincible's 20th anniversary.

Mike Rogers, creative director of Skybound, described it as "an amazing visual novel experience, choice-based, with Eve in control. Eve can decide whose ass she kicks and who she dates.

Visual novels, usually in the realm of horror or dating sims, share a lot of conceptual DNA with comic books, with RPG elements and a funky, Griftlands-like combat system.

Atom Eve is a fairly important character in both the series and the comics, a badass who can manipulate subatomic particles to do basically anything, and is highly anticipated by fans. She even got her own one-episode special prior to the second season of Invincible.

Kirkman also revealed that the game "continues to expand the Invincible universe."

So, yes. It's an interesting direction, given the kinds of images that come to mind when one thinks of "a video game adaptation of Invincible. But given the genre-busting nature of the series, it seems quite fitting to lay something strange and unique at the feet of gamers who were expecting something more action-packed.

Invincible Presents: Atom Eve will be coming to Steam in mint condition later this year, but no specific release date has been announced.
