Trap-Dodging First-Person Runner "Phantom Abyss" Escapes Early Access
[a complete version 1.0 that combines roguelike and runner and offers three game modes of play. In Phantom Abyss, players take on the role of a tomb-digging adventurer, challenged to reach the innermost reaches of a dungeon filled with incredibly deadly traps and recover valuable treasures from them.

The new Adventure Mode, introduced in 1.0, is a set of non-roguelike journeys through specific handcrafted temples, perfect places to learn the game or enjoy it solo. Each temple has a whip to use, relics to collect, and challenges to confront.

But one of the coolest features of Phantom Abyss is the asynchronous multiplayer in the classic Abyss mode. Ghosts of other failed adventurers appear in the levels, allowing you to see how other adventurers died tragically along the way. Also of note is the way Phantom Abyss levels are built: if someone wins a particular dig, they get the treasure underneath, and that's the end of it.

There is also a new daily mode, with a series of challenges that put you on par with other players with specific equipment and requirements. As far as I can tell from reviews and community comments, these range from "2EZ4ME" to angrily difficult, which, at least for me, is the sweet spot of the daily mode.

"Phantom Abyss 1.0 is the result of countless hours of development, meticulous iteration, and unwavering care for our amazing community," said Ben Marinan, creative director of Team WIBY, in a press release. It's the game we've always dreamed of, and we hope people dive into the adventure with as much passion as we poured into creating it." [PhantomAbyss is developed by Team WIBY and published by Devolver Digital; PhantomAbyss is available on Steam for $20, but is 10-50% off through February 1.
