Japanese Indie Developer Tells Rogue to "Buy it, you piece of garbage" and Offers Exposure by Begging for Keyboard

I never get tired of the "go ahead and do it yourself" argument from indie developers, like when the developer of "Iron Lung" made it clear that the $2 price increase was to make more money from the game. It's a tough industry (especially these days).

Another such gem came from the developer of the upcoming Japanese roguelike "Machina of the Planet Tree": a hack-and-slash version of "Risk of Rain," but featuring a thinly clad catgirl named Retla Stoltein.

Housenka, the developer of Denneko Yugi, is clearly marketing this title to anime-girl appreciators. It helps that these animations are genuinely cute, well put together, and expressive enough for the best wife/husband material in Gensho Ibunroku.

Sharing previews of the game on Twitter drew attention, and with the attention came the "pay for exposure!" and with the promise of "I'll pay for the exposure!" in hand, many strangers come to you asking for keys. While it is certainly not uncommon for developers to hand over keys to individual influencers, indie developers are often thrown into turmoil because of the considerable underbelly of key hunters who try to sell keys on resale sites.

In a recent FAQ found by Automaton, Housenka responds to the hypothetical "I'll give you a Steam key so you can promote it" with a delightfully blunt "Buy it, you piece of garbage."

Automaton's Japanese translation is "Buy the game, you piece of shit." It is. Honestly, I can't decide which I like better; the full FAQ is worth a read, if only for Housenka's sense of humor and insight into the absurd questions independent developers get these days.

"Please make this character's butt and thighs thicker," another frequent questioner demands, to which Housenka replies: "Accept her as she is." In response to a phantom question, "Will sex be added to this game?", Housenka provides a link to "DLsite", an online store that sells doujinshi. There is no sex. Please visit DLsite for that."

Planet Tree Machina: Mugen Ourokaku will be in early access on Steam "by this summer or so," Housenka wrote, but "it will still take about two years to implement all the elements." However, a free demo is available for download on the studio's website.
