Fans fear that Snake will become a walking corpse.

It was a pretty great week for Metal Gear Solid fans, with the Xbox Games Showcase showing off the first gameplay trailer for "MGS Delta," which actually looked promising.

The game's introductory page has some interesting information, including that Konami rendered the characters and stages in Unreal Engine 5 and that players can now choose a "more modern control style." However, there is one new feature that has caught players' attention. That is that if you injure Snake, he will leave a scar.

"The battle damage system has been upgraded to reflect wear and tear on Snake's clothing, bruises on his body and bullet wounds in real time." Actual wounds to the body will permanently leave their mark and tell the story of each player's unique journey through the game." While this sounds rather trivial, some players have noted that poor game skills can render snakes completely unrecognizable.

Most of the replies to one player's tweet about this new feature are pictures of various characters undergoing recuperation. They include Guts from "Beserk," the Batman villain Tuface, a bandaged fish from "Sponge Bob," and a fish with bones made of glass and paper skin. It would honestly be quite interesting to see how beat up my Snake would get during the game, and it might create a variation on the unscathed speed run, where the Snake would have to restart if he suffered a visible wound. For other players, however, wounds are not a top priority. Instead, the fragility of Snake's clothing is the top priority. One player responds, "The first thing I do is absolutely destroy his shirt."

This new feature probably won't be very punitive, since you can't just take a sick day off to wait for a sprained ankle to heal, but it's still a fun quirk and very much in keeping with previous "MGS" games. In the original "MGS 3," you could win a fight against the sniper "The End" by waiting a week outside the game until he died of old age, so permanent injury is far from the strangest addition Konami has made to this series.
