FOMO is Alive and Well - Life is Strange Double Exposure" Ultimate Edition purchases will have a two-week Early Access period.

I was a little dry on "Life is Strange" earlier this week, but I still like the game overall.

"Life is Strange": Double Exposure" is a direct sequel to the first in the series and follows Maxine Caulfield as she gains the ability to travel between parallel worlds in order to solve the mystery of another dead best friend. Poor gal can't catch a break.

Naturally, the game comes in Deluxe and Ultimate versions. Everyone will agree that these bundles are annoying, especially for a story-driven game, but at least the lack of costumes for 2 and 3 won't have a major impact on the story.

The base edition of the game costs about $50, the deluxe edition about $60, and the Ultimate Edition a whopping $80. The base game remains at 50 and 60 pounds, and while I don't know how the conversion rate will work, we may be living in a parallel universe where the pound is suffering more than it is now.

The real kicker is that, aside from the side quest of saving the cat, the Ultimate Edition will give you early access to the first episode of the game a full two weeks before launch (thanks, Eurogamer).

I don't think paid early access is great in most situations, but I understand why it exists. If you like something, you may want to play it early. But that is generally in multiplayer games or games where the story is put on the back burner, usually just a few days instead of two weeks.

In the case of Life is Strange, the story is an afterthought: but in the case of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, the story is the whole point, and major spoilers will, of course, spread across the Internet like wildfire shortly after the game goes live. And to add insult to injury, the game is also a game that is not only about the story, but also about the game itself. To add insult to injury, the game's Steam page says: "Don't miss your chance to join the conversation surrounding this unforgettable supernatural murder mystery!" --FOMO seems to be alive and well.

Some fans are understandably angry: "There is very little moderation [on YouTube], and some people put mercilessly accurate spoilers in the titles and thumbnails, which are simply spoiled by the algorithm," writes 68ideal in the game's subreddit

"It's a very good thing.

"I don't think anyone thinks that's a good move," writes another would-be player: "The problem is that companies like Square-Enix are going to give in anyway to show that they can get away with using early access as an incentive to upgrade. and that some people are willing to buy it. [Otherwise, the community's negative feelings don't seem to have developed into a big wave like the PSN controversy over "Helldivers 2"; on Twitter, nostalgia, excitement, and demands to get Chloe Price out of hiding (unfortunately, I'm getting a hint of the bay from the trailer I'm getting it) are all over the place. But it's just getting started, and I can't help but wonder if more complaints will erupt once the spoilerific YouTube thumbnails are released. Life is Strange Double Exposure is released on October 29. Unless, of course, you pay the extra $30 fee, in which case you can get it on October 15.
