General
After repeated delays, the remake of "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" will be released in 2026, and the word "remake" is no longer in the title.

Just a week after Ubisoft Toronto joined the list of studios looking to complete "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake," Ubisoft announced a new release target in a big live stream today.

Seems like a very long time to remake a game that already exists. This is because Ubisoft Montreal is still working on it as well. However, to be fair, it was completely rebooted in 2023, but the reason for this has not been revealed

.

By that measure, with a development time of three years, it's still a long shot unless they plan to drastically change the game, but then why not just make an entirely new game?

Regardless of their reasons, it is clear that Ubisoft has nothing to show for the time and effort spent on the Sons of Time remake so far:

And that was it. Windows. Candles. 2026. have a good day.

And that's not all. Not mentioned at all, the name also changed a bit: the "Remake" part of the title was dropped and it was simply called Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Courtesy of Wayback Machine, this is the website for yesterday's Sands of Time Remake:

And this is the current one:

Notice that it is also labeled "Ubisoft Original". What does that mean? Four studios have been involved in the development of Sands of Time Remake, all of which are internal Ubi projects.

The reason for the name change has not been revealed (literally just a picture of a candle!) ), it makes me think that maybe Ubisoft really is making some comprehensive changes to the game and has removed the "remake" part of the title to better reflect that. For now, it's just an odd little shift in direction, but it's also the most interesting part of the reveal, although I don't think it reflects particularly well on the state of things after four years of work.

Meanwhile, Beyond Good and Evil 2 was announced in 2008, and Ubisoft has promised at least 24 times since then (as of January 2023, when I got tired of counting) that it is still in development, but it was not even mentioned at today's show. So what do I know?

I have contacted Ubisoft about this change and will update if I hear back.
