History is your murder playground Assassin's Creed x Magic: The Gathering

A typical assassin's creed moment would be: You sneak into a historically important building, stab a historically important villain, listen to a dying speech that lasts an amazingly long time thanks to Animus's technomagic, and you run the heck out. Running away is important, because you don't want to get caught and forcibly get asynchronous.

It is important enough that it is interpreted as a new mechanic in Assassin's Creed x Magic: The Gathering crossover called Freerunning. Whether you're leaping off Notre Dame or Big Ben, you should be doing it at maximum speed, and the Magic Crossover set simulates it by increasing your tempo with low-cost cards.

As with that new mechanic, some existing mechanic will come back. Disguise and cloak, both introduced in the murder at Karlov Manor, make sense not to bring them back. These 2 features are a bit different, but with both disguise and cloak, you can table cards in dramatic moments, such as when you're attacked and need a more powerful blocker.

Historical cards are also coming back. Legends, artifacts, or sagas count as historical cards, but it's rare to have other cards that care about their designation. Again, it makes sense to return the designation to prominence for assassin's Creed, a series of games that allow you to play fast and loose games with facts, but always evokes the essence of historical settings. (I didn't know anything about Medjay until I played in Assassin's Creed Origins, so sometimes I learn something.

The card you are previewing from the set is a card that interacts with a historical card. The Desynchronization card (with art by Lee Setiawan) returns non-land permanent to the owner's hand unless it is historical. You can't get rid of Leonardo da Vinci (who is designated legendary) or your opponent's Haystack card (technically an artifact), but those who do not belong will be blown away, as if they had stabbed too many innocent people or broken a simulation of history.

I wouldn't know anything, because I'm a careful player, I wouldn't lose sync by going somewhere, or breaking a creed, or getting caught, or dying from a sting, or falling from too great heights, or eating too many animals without peeling them. Kill, and it's a coincidence that I know all the ways you can async.

Assassin's Creed Universe Beyond Set will be available from 7/5.
