Even Riot isn't trying to compete with Fortnite on user-generated content: "I'm not going to choose to fight Epic."

Riot is an area of user-generated content, from spin-off games to animated series and even some high-profile music crossovers, making the already massively popular MOBA League Of Legends more, but at least for core games.UGC has been a massive boon for some games, but Riot sees it as not a good fit for League.

Andrei van Roon, head of League Studio at Riot, said in a recent Q&A session that while the studio may be interested in pursuing UGC on other projects, League of Legends itself is not actually built for such things.

"We feel a lot of what we've built in a league that has strengths, what players are looking for, for us to build an UGC platform

League Of Legends Game Director Pu Liu said that user-generated content is "primarily based on the platform." He said that a small number of games such as Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft already dominate, describing them as "all markets that take quite a winner.""If you look at Riot's strengths and our competitive advantage, I don't think we're going to choose to fight Epic," Liu said. "My boss, Andre, might say to us that we should, but I think it's a play on the technology platform, not a play that is likely to win," he said.

Riot may be feeling a bit of pressure to "do something" in League of Legends. As Liu and van Roon pointed out in the same Q&A, League's core player base is getting older and fewer newcomers. This is because the league is facing competition from games like Fortnite and Roblox. It just didn't exist when the league peaked. This issue is complicated by the accessibility challenges inherent in being a 15-year-old game.It tends to be dominated by people who have literally grown up, and putting it mildly can be discouraging for beginners.

One of the things Riot has in mind to expand its audience is to make it as easy as possible to recognize games and move between games.1 For example, in late 2023, the studio added the Legends of Runeterra button to the League of Legends client. This, van Roon said, "felt like a good way to serve both existing league players who want to play LOR and the LoR community who are looking for more players, especially since we know that MOBA and strategy audiences overlap.""

It's not a universal thing — Van Loon said 2XKO, Riot's upcoming fighting game, "there may not be a similar audience overlap", but the overarching goal is "to make sure that the flow of a really easy ecosystem is progressing

"It depends on the game." "I'm not going to do that," van Loon said. "But we certainly do not want to feel going "alone on a small island", as the legend of Runeterra had before."
