First "Baldur's Gate 3" Patch Released

Update: And just like that, the first Baldur's Gate 3 update is live on Steam. According to Larian, they are still working on a few issues, but this should fix a number of the more pressing issues that have been reported.

"As a general message, if you are having difficulty starting the game or experiencing crashes, switch the game to DX11 mode (click the gear in the launcher) and make sure you have the latest graphics drivers," Larian said.

"Also, if you are experiencing slowdowns when Steam/Discord overlays are enabled, it is recommended that you disable them.

A full list of fixes follows:

We suggested yesterday that you hold off on it for now unless you are really committed to jumping into Baldur's Gate 3 as soon as possible. As early access, even Larian warns that "there are still a lot of problems and it will take time to fix them."

The good news for intrepid Early Access adventurers is that the first hotfix is forthcoming: Larian stated on Steam that they are currently looking into the multiplayer issues and are preparing a fix. He also strongly recommends switching from Vulkan to DX11 (which has been shown to improve stuttering and pauses), activating the transponder on the Naughty Lloyd's Helm while the PC is down in combat, and not exiting tutorial levels, among other Several workarounds for the problem have also been suggested.

Other suggestions: don't save multiplayer games during cinematic, don't listen to finished co-op conversations (don't even know how to do it), "save with caution in multiplayer": if the host saves directly after combat, it is prone to crashes.

"This is the beginning of our Early Access journey and we are very grateful to everyone who has given us feedback so far. We look forward to continuing to work with you. 'Again, this feedback is very much appreciated. Feedback from many of you is very important to us and we appreciate your patience. We hope you enjoy it.

Despite the problems and our recommendation to wait, Fraser said in his review of Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access that it is "very promising and seems to be headed in the right direction." There is also a discussion of comparisons with the previous two games in the series.
