Fictional musical duo from Kentucky Route Zero releases EP

The indie point-and-click adventure game "Kentucky Route Zero," which was released episodically (not to mention sporadically) between 2013 and 2020, may have reached the end of its fifth chapter earlier this year, but the game still has a few surprises in store, it turns out. Specifically, this week the game's fictional musical duo, Johnny and Junebug, released an EP.

Titled Too Late To Love You, the album by the deformed Junebug (Johnny can't top it, apparently) includes the title track from Kentucky Route Zero and Static Between Stations, and nine new songs. As a big fan of extended video game lore, the concept of a fictional band with a real-life back catalog is an interesting one, especially when the music is this wonderful and strange.

The haunting instrumental section seems to be taken straight from Twin Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti, and the synthesizer vocals are reminiscent of the sound of the 1980s. It must have been unexpected that the EP was released more than eight months after the game's final episode was released, but the wistful combination of nostalgia and creepiness makes these songs perfect for October listening.

If that's too tempting to resist, you can purchase Junebug's new EP for $7 on Bandcamp right now.
