Blizzard Confirms Digital BlizzCon Early Next Year

In May, Blizzard was forced to cancel BlizzCon 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. However, like many other companies that have been forced to cancel major festivals, the company said it would instead like to host an online alternative event scheduled to take place around 2021. During Activision's Q2 earnings call today, Blizzard president J. Allen Black confirmed that this plan is still in the works.

"We plan to bring the spirit of BlizzCon to our virtual event early next year. We're really fortunate to have a passionate and engaged community that really enjoys what we're creating and what we're working on." And we look forward to sharing what our team has been working on for that event."

Blizzard should be in a good position to make the online event a success: they usually offer "virtual tickets" for those who can't attend BlizzCon in person, live streaming access to panels, cosplay contests, esports competitions and the opening ceremony will also be streamed for free to everyone.

Unfortunately, Brack did not say anything more about what it is he is looking forward to sharing, but he did say that Blizzard has "a number of initiatives underway" besides "tenpole sequels" to "Diablo," "Overwatch" and "World of Warcraft. many initiatives," he forewarned.
