StarCraft 2 Celebrates 10th Anniversary with Largest Update Ever

Not many video games continue to be played ten years after their release. Even fewer are still actively supported by their developers at that age; StarCraft 2 is one of those rare exceptions, and Blizzard is celebrating this big anniversary with a new announcer, esports reminiscences, and new achievements, co-op Commander talent, and the official release of the 5.0 patch, the biggest patch ever, which adds a major upgrade to the map editor, among other things.

New achievements will be added to all StarCraft 2 missions, including the Nova Covert Ops mission pack, allowing players to "relive the story and discover new ways to play. And if that's not enough, players will also receive a new Stone Announcer (Agent X74996R).

Another new announcer, White-Ra-Ukrainian StarCraft 2 pro Aleksey "White-Ra" Krupnyk- will be given to all players who log into the game between July 27 and August 10.

The new Prestige Talents allow players who are passionate about StarCraft 2 to play up to three command progressions from level 1-15, earning a new talent each time. Blizzard states, "These prestige talents can completely transform a commander's play, opening the door to new gameplay options and strategic decisions."

Taking a short break from the game itself, Blizzard will also be releasing a new series of short stories set in the Koprulu Section.

Small gameplay changes are also on the way, including a "countdown to start" timer that will tick down to a short countdown after the loading screen and the ability to select game servers in a custom lobby, which Blizzard says players can "look forward to in the future."

First announced earlier this month, the update to StarCraft 2's map editor, which incorporates elements taken from the Warcraft 3 editor aimed at making it easier to use overall without sacrificing "depth of customization," is itself a big things. Highlights include the addition of map-to-map loading, allowing multiplayer lobbies to be transitioned between new maps; a campaign that was previously offline-only can now be accessed from StarCraft 2 Arcade; formation movement and water pass creation, the creation of cliffs with up to 15 layers (previously limited to 3 layers), and the addition of a new "data collection" system.
