Windows 10 May 2020 Update Rolling Out to More PCs Despite Remaining Bugs

After waiting nearly two months for the May 2020 update of Windows 10 to become available for my PC, I was finally able to upgrade my main desktop recently. But whether or not I should apply the update to my PC, I need to weigh the risks and rewards.

Microsoft has delayed the rollout of the May 2020 update. By staggering the release schedule, Microsoft is identifying bugs that may have been missed during months of testing in the Windows Insider program and giving them room to be removed. And there are several known issues in the latest update.

There are also plenty of issues that have been resolved, which is why Microsoft is confident enough to expand the offering to more PCs.

"Windows 10, version 2004 is available to users with devices running Windows 10, versions 1903 and 1909 who have manually "Check for Updates" via Windows Update. We are now beginning a new phase of the rollout. Using the machine learning-based (ML-based) training we have been doing, we are increasing the number of devices that choose to automatically update to Windows 10, version 2004 that are nearing end-of-service," Microsoft said in its latest support document (via Windows Latest).

Issues still under investigation include:

Some of these issues have been on Microsoft's radar since the May 2020 Update first arrived two months ago, while others (like the mouse dragging bug) have only recently became apparent. We suggest using the list above as a guide when deciding whether to apply the update. For example, if you rely on the use of multiple Bluetooth devices, you may want to wait until that issue is resolved.

Fortunately, Microsoft is not sitting on its hands. While there are seven unresolved issues, they have fixed many, including:

You can check to see if the May 2020 update is available on your PC by going to Settings > Update and Security and clicking the "Check for Updates" button. If the update still does not show up and you really need it, you can go to the Windows 10 download page and click "Update Now" to attempt a manual installation.

However, please be aware that manual installation may not work. I tried manual installation twice before it was officially installed on my PC, but both times I received error messages during the process and gave up on the installation.
