Driving in the open world usually allows you to throw traffic rules out the window and get away with it. Not so in the Mafia's Lost Haven, where reckless driving and ignoring red lights attract the attention of cops.

However, with the upcoming Definitive Edition, Hangar 13 has made some adjustments. This is one of the features that sets Mafia apart from other open-world crime games, so it will not be removed, but it will allow players to tinker with settings regarding police presence and behavior when rules are broken.

In a chat with USGamer, Hangar 13 president Haden Blackman said that the challenge was part of the original's appeal and they do not want to throw it away. The studio is trying to incorporate tricks while also allowing people to just enjoy the story. In addition to toning down the cops, there are several more difficulty options and two driving modes.

At the PC Gaming Show, Blackman described other changes that will affect the driving experience, including wider roads and fewer 90-degree curves. The goal is to make driving in urban areas, where the majority of the game will be spent, more enjoyable.

The gunfights have also been modernized and updated with references to the combat in "Mafia 3," but "Hangar 13" still tries to maintain differentiation. Clay knows how to handle a gun and had just returned from the war at the start of "Mafia 3," while Tommy is a bit clueless. He's just a cab driver. In "Mafia" you have to be more careful because getting into a fight can be fatal.
