First "Guild Wars" Celebrates Anniversary with Surprise Update

"Guild Wars" celebrates its anniversary today, 15 years after its launch, and while its 2012 sequel may have been overshadowed, Guild Wars is still going strong.

ArenaNet's first MMO, which came shortly after "World of Warcraft," was a cut above what would later become the world's most popular and enduring MMO in several categories.

While I had dabbled in other MMOs, it was the first MMO I truly invested in and it stood apart from the rest. One of the things that made it very attractive to students who didn't have constant money was that it didn't require a subscription. And while the visuals were years ahead of WoW and most other MMOs, they were perfectly playable on my crappy pre-built rig with a garbage integrated GPU. It was also one of the few MMOs that seemed to value the solo experience, but not at the expense of multiplayer.

Despite this, I hadn't thought about it for years. I didn't even know it was still working. It will probably be much quieter than before, but I may be a little busier in the next week now that I have a few more reasons to log back in.

If you jump into the game today, you can visit the Anniversary Celebration at Embark Beach. There, you will find vendors selling new 10th anniversary weapons, one for each profession.

From the same vendor, you can also get a Relic, "Proof of Triumph," which summons bosses and other enemies on four maps later in the game. The bosses themselves are not new, but the Signet of Capture gives you new PvE elite skills for your profession. The Signet of Triumph will also continue to function after the Anniversary Celebration is over.

The Guild Wars Store also offers discounts on things including costumes and upgrades, and Guild Wars 2 players can get free gifts from the Black Lion Trading Company for their characters in the sequel.

If you're feeling nostalgic, join the developers for a live stream on Twitch on April 28 to reminisce with them. It will begin at noon Pacific Standard Time.

It may be time to dust off the old clients.
