PUBG Corp Offers $20,000 to Teams Following Tournament Cancellation

In February, PUBG Corp decided to "indefinitely postpone" PlayerUnknown's Battleground's PGS: Berlin tournament in the wake of a coronavirus outbreak in Germany. The ongoing health crisis made it difficult to hold the live tournament, and all three PGS events were cancelled. However, there is still payback for those teams that made it through the qualifying rounds.

"Teams and players who have participated in the 2020 campaign thus far deserve recognition and compensation for their competitive spirit," the update posted Friday reads.

Twenty-one teams have already qualified for PGS Berlin and will each receive $20,000, along with the top five teams from the ongoing PUBG Champions League. The U.S. Regional Qualifier has been postponed, so $120,000 will be split among the top six seeded teams.

Those who were hoping to see some PUBG competition this summer can still do so thanks to the PUBG Continental Series. This online tournament will replace the cancelled event, pitting teams against each other in their respective regions from May through August. The tournament will be split between Asia, Asia Pacific, Europe, and North America, with a total prize pool of $2,400,000.

The first of these events is the PCS Charity Showdown, a charity tournament held in May. This invitational event will pit players against each other for a prize pool of $100,000, with an additional $100,000 going to a charity of the winning team's choice. Four PCS regional tournaments will then be held from June through August, with each region competing for a total prize pool of $200,000.

"This year we have worked to strengthen our esports program by providing sustainability for teams, strengthening fandom, growing the ecosystem with our partners, and improving our competition structure and profit sharing model," said PUBG Corp. While we will not be able to host the PGS event as originally planned, we want to emphasize that our commitment to our goals is unwavering."

Expect more details on this year's PUBG esports event and the company's future plans "at a later date." It is good to see that the battle royale shenanigans continue despite the obstacles.
