Half-Life Alyx Level Editor Becomes Focus of Valve's Development

When Valve announced Half-Life: Alyx last year, they said the level editor would be available to the public." A complete set of Source 2 tools for building new levels will be available for the game, allowing any player to contribute by building new environments for the community to enjoy. Hammer, Valve's level authoring tool, has been updated with all of the game's virtual reality gameplay tools and components." [Half-Life: Steam's Alyx listing also states that a level editor will be included with the game, which is currently not the case. But in case you were wondering (or completely forgot), Valve developer Jake Rodkin confirmed on Resetera that it's still happening.

"Now that the game has been released, that's the team's focus. More details will be forthcoming soon, but we are working on it," Rodkin wrote. 'I'm sorry I don't have a date beyond this, but I'm sure we'll hear more soon. Most of last week was spent on post-launch patching and tech support."

Modders have already been working hard to make Alyx compatible with non-VR setups, and while their early efforts have paid off, they were also junk at best and not playable in any decent sense. Access to a level editing toolset would be a big help in such an effort, depending on how it is implemented (Valve said at the AMA earlier this year that they have no plans to release a full version of the SDK).

That said, there are of course possibilities for new VR worlds created by users. For starters, maybe a headclub sports arena?
