Duelist to Permanently Shut Down Server

Duelyst, a hybrid digital card game and tactics battler, will shut down its servers permanently on February 27, 2020. Developer Counterplay Games announced in a post on Steam titled "Farewell Duelyst" that it is "saddened" by the game's end; since Duelyst is an online-only game, this will effectively end the game entirely.Counterplay Games is a design studio, but Duelyst is being published in conjunction with Namco Bandai; players who recently purchased diamonds, Duelyst's in-game currency, will be eligible for a refund.

At the time of its release, Duelyst was often considered one of the best digital card games since Hearthstone for its unique combination of tactical combat and card-based mechanics. In Duelyst, players use cards to summon creatures to the battlefield on a grid and use unique placement rules to manipulate tactical situations to their advantage. In our review at launch, we called Duelyst "a gorgeous tactics card game (with considerable depth)" and gave it a high rating of 84/100. Duelyst was designed by Eric Lang, an immensely popular designer in the tabletop gaming world; Duelyst was first released in 2016 after a beta period.

For me, it was a stark reminder that a game released as a service model is not my property and could be taken away at any time.
