Why Marcus Lett left Bungy

Marcus Lett is currently hard at work on V1 Interactive's FPS "Disintegration," but the veteran designer has spent time at Bungie in the past. In fact, he is often credited as the creator of Master Chief.

A recent report from GameSpot offers Lehto's thoughts on why he left the "Halo" franchise.

"I think one of the reasons I left Bungie, and one of the reasons people in the industry joined us here at V1, is because many of us have seen the bad side of long crunch periods that can last months and months," Lehto told Disintegration's Roundtable interview, he explained. 'We [V1] don't want to go through that, and we don't want to go through that again.'

Lehto further stated that one of V1's main goals is to create a workplace atmosphere where "there is a lot of responsibility on everyone's shoulders because everyone is closely involved in what we are working on."

According to Left, V1 prioritizes staff spending time at home with their families and "going to their kids' school concerts."

This does not mean that there is no crunch in V1, only that it is more controlled. According to Recht, the team works longer than usual during the week leading up to the development milestone.

At least publicly, things seem to be looking up for Bungie over the past few years. Last year, Bungie intentionally delayed a patch for Destiny 2 so as not to burden developers.

Lehto's latest game, Disintegration, is scheduled to launch somewhere between Q1 and Q2 2020. The game's beta, however, will begin next week. To register, click here.
