Oculus Go standalone VR headset reduced $50 to $149

The Oculus Go was already one of the more affordable VR headsets on the market, but now it's even cheaper: the 32GB model has been reduced to $149 and the 64GB model to $199.

These are permanent 25% price cuts, as opposed to a limited time offer or some sort of promotion.

"The Oculus Go is currently priced at US$149, which equates to a $50 price cut; we are applying an equivalent discount in all countries where the Go is sold. The updated price will be rolled out across all channels," Facebook said in a statement.

The new pricing matches the Black Friday discount we saw on the Oculus Go a few months ago, which is one of the cheapest ways to experience VR, though not as feature-rich as the Oculus Quest, the best VR headset for many people.

But before you jump in, remember that the Oculus Go is fairly basic compared to high-end headsets. The features and specs are as follows:

The advantage of the Oculus Go is that it is a standalone headset, meaning that all the necessary hardware is self-contained, so there is no need to connect it to a PC or cram a smartphone into the visor. It also has built-in speakers and provides three-degree-of-freedom tracking (3DoF) of the headset and remote-style controller. In other words, it can essentially track head movement (tilt and rotation), but does not support positional tracking to detect front-back and up-down movement.

By comparison, the Oculus Quest is also a standalone headset, but with more powerful hardware and better tracking capabilities (6DoF). More recently, Facebook updated the Oculus Quest to support a PC connection cable for playing regular Rift games. This will allow Half-Life: Alyx to be played on the Oculus Quest, but not on the Go, where the link cable is not available.

Since the Oculus Go is a much cheaper option, it is easy to overlook some of its shortcomings. This is especially true for users who want to test the waters of VR without spending a fortune on the experience.

Amazon does not currently have the 32GB model in stock, but that is expected to change soon. Until then, the Oculus Go is available directly from Oculus or at a newly discounted price at Best Buy.
