AMD Releases Second GPU Driver in a Week, Fixes Intermittent Restarts

AMD has released a new Adrenalin driver (20.1.2) for Radeon graphics cards. According to the release notes, it addresses an issue that causes intermittent reboots when a PC is left idle on the desktop.

This is a quirky bug and very annoying to those affected by it. No one wants to come back from a bathroom break to find their PC inexplicably rebooting.

The only other bug fix related to this driver relates to some UE4-based games that fail to launch with the Adrenalin 2020 Edition software. These include KovaaK 2.0: Meta, Tetris Effect, and Snooker 19.

The list of issues fixed by AMD has generally been much longer since they announced the Adrenalin 2020 driver overhaul earlier in the year. However, this is a relatively minor update; AMD announced a much larger GPU update last week that included over 20 bug fixes and optimized code for Monster Hunter World: Iceborn

My hunch is that the main reason for this release is that Khronos Group to boast support for the Vulkan 1.2 specification announced yesterday. This will eventually become more important to gamers, but for now it is primarily of interest to game developers.

In addition to that, AMD's driver team has optimized for "Dragon Ball Z Kakarot," which will be released tomorrow. I can't imagine it will be too taxing on the hardware (the minimum and recommended specs support my guess), but in any case, I don't think this is the real reason for providing a second driver in a week. It would be more of a bonus.

You can get the update from the Radeon Software utility, or you can download it from here and install it manually. As always, be sure to check out our guide on how to update your drivers for best practice tips.
