Netgear's high-speed Nighthawk AC2100 wireless router on sale for $89

If you need a new router, now is the time to buy. Not only are holiday sales still going on, but with the advent of Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), vendors are trying to make room for new models by marking down their Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) inventory. 2100 (R7200-100NAS) for $89. Through the first half of November, Amazon was selling this same model for about $180, and while the price has since dropped (currently listed at $120.99), this deal puts you at an advantage.

Don't be afraid to buy the Wi-Fi 5 model, especially at this price. Of course, the new Wi-Fi 6 model offers some nice enhancements over the Wi-Fi 5, and there are reasons why gamers should stick with the Wi-Fi 6. The biggest one is the improved handling of multiple devices on the network. However, to get the most out of a Wi-Fi 6 router, devices and wireless adapters must also support Wi-Fi 6, and few existing ones do, like USB Type-C in that it is a better connector than USB Type-A, It will take time for it to become the de facto standard.

Wi-Fi 5 hardware, on the other hand, is fairly ubiquitous. In my tests, Netgear's Nighthawk model was one of the best gaming routers, with a fast and powerful wireless signal. Also, the high price makes this campaign very attractive.

From a technical standpoint, this is a dual-band model that supports speeds of up to 800 Mbps on 2.4 GHz channels and 1,300 Mbps on 5 GHz channels. It also has a built-in 4-port switch for wired connections (fairly standard), a USB 3.0 port for connecting external storage devices or printers (to share either on the network), and a range of three amplifiers and an external antenna suitable for "large homes."
