Doomguy and Isabelle from "Animal Crossing: New Leaf" are best friends, the Internet says.

You wouldn't think that Doom, a game about slaying a large number of hell-bound demons as quickly as possible, and Animal Crossing, a game about life in an idyllic village, would have anything in common. When Bethesda delayed Doom Eternal from late 2019 to March 20, 2020, gamers noticed that the release date would be the same as Nintendo's new Animal Crossing game. The absurd combination has generated incredible fan art over the past few months.

Whether the combination of Doom Guy and "Animal Crossing's" lovable mayoral secretary Isabelle has reached meme status remains to be seen. But there is some great art out there, as summarized in this Resetera thread, some from around October when Doom was postponed, and the two seem to be gaining momentum right now, inspiring more and more art.

Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part. I definitely want more art.

The crossover appeal is obvious. Doom Guy fishing and lounging on the beach: interesting. Isabelle holding a shotgun the size of her own body: interesting. Why shouldn't Doom Guy be cute? Who says Isabelle won't take up arms to defend her town? It's clearly meant to be.

How can you not love this piece by Resetera's boris_feinbrand?

I want more. Sample via Twitter:

If anything good could happen in the world between now and March 20, it would be an explosion of Doom meets Animal Crossing fan art.

Really, I think the combination of Doom and Animal Crossing was always destined to happen. Animal Crossing exists only because of the famous 1994 Edge magazine review of Doom: "If you could talk to the creatures, you might make friends with them or form alliances with them. That could be interesting. How else could Nintendo come up with the idea of a video game about talking to your animal neighbors? A roundabout way.
